We are so honored and excited to be nominated for the Liebster Award this year by the wonderful travel bloggers Ash and Kile Brewer! They are a traveling married couple from Portland, Oregon! We are so touched by what they wrote about us and happy that they got what we are trying to portray with our blog! What we love the most about them is that they are basically us! Initially struggling millennials with copious amount of loans, working everyday and wanting more from life! They are currently traveling around the world and in Bali now! Check out their Site!

Explore Every Road

The Liebster Award is a way that bloggers nominate other travel bloggers!  It is a recognition award that helps get the word out about new and upcoming bloggers as well as connect and support with the blogging community! The idea is that bloggers you didn’t know, recognize your blog, and want to let their readers know  “Check out this blog, we love them and we think you will too!”

Here’s the basics behind how the award works, for the full list of official rules check it out here:

  • Answer the questions given to you by the person(s) who nominated you
  • Come up with 10-12 questions of your own to send to your nominees
  • Spread the love by nominating 5 blogs you enjoy reading that you think deserve more exposure!

Here are the answers to the questions given to us by Explore Every Road! We hope you enjoy learning a little more about us!

1.) What’s the funniest and/or strangest situation you’ve found yourself in while traveling?

Well it wasn’t funny at the time, but now looking back it was kind of funny how it all worked out. We went on a trip to Italy and our flight ran late and we had to switch to a sister airline. We knew we were in trouble. When we landed in Rome on a Saturday, we found out our luggage was still in Germany. We were annoyed, but overall we figured ok we’ll just get it tomorrow. Well when we told our tour guide of this situation she said O no! You won’t be able to get your bags until at least Monday. Apparently, in Italy no one really works on Sunday’s so even though the airport was open no one was going to do anything about our lost luggage.  To make a long story short, we didn’t get our bags until the 8th day out of 9 in Italy, with trekking through a rain storm for a a logn period of time to get to a Florence airport . We ended up having to spend some time shopping for clothes while in Rome (lesson learned for Amanda: pack a change of clothes in your carry on. Lesson learned for Steve: Italian underwear is really small). When the tour group saw we finally had our luggage everyone clapped for us and we all laughed at the crazy situation we were just put through.

2.) What is your favorite country you’ve visited so far? And just like we had to do – you can only pick one!

Our favorite country is French Polynesia, aka Bora Bora. It was our honeymoon destination and basically paradise. We loved every minute of being there. We were able to have the best of two worlds- be adventurous and go ATVing, Jet Skiing and snorkeling and also be able to relax and just sit by the beach. The water is the most pristine turquoise heaven we have ever seen and swam in.

3.) What are you favorite things to do while traveling (sports, lounging, excursions, etc.)?

We like to do half relaxation and half excursions! Half the time we like to just relax at a local cafe, bar, or beach. The other half of time we like to do excursions,  jet skiing, ATVing, snorkeling, tours, museums etc. We like the balance so we can get a taste of the cultures and local living but aren’t burnt out!.

4.) How do you deal with or what do you do during long layovers or really long flights?

Ahead of time we like to download movies or TV shows that we can binge watch. We both also have our separate likes. When we’re out of shows to watch we have our own separate ways of handling the extended period of times, Amanda will read a book or simply sleep the time away. Steve will throw on a pair of headphones and work on his latest programming project.

5.) What are your go-to resources when it comes to booking your flights or places to stay?

We always ask our friends and families first to get honest reviews of hotels and places to stay.  Usually we’ll get some pretty good tips from friends or family who have traveled to wherever we’re going. Amanda also does a lot of research, looking at travel blogs (for more honest tips) and TripAdvisor (for a mass of reviews).

For booking flights Kayak.com or Expedia is the go-to resource, but we also sign up for daily deals from Secret flights to see if we can score a deal.

6.) Has travel blogging ever rewarded you or provided you with any perks?

Not yet! But we’re pretty new at this and still getting our feet wet. One hotel we did a review of in our Napa post offered us a 20% off discount because they were flattered by our review, but we haven’t been able to take advantage of that yet.

7.) What is your absolute favorite part of traveling?

We love being able to travel and explore the world together. We’ve been fortunate enough to be able to see a lot of the U.S. and some places in the world that most people have only ever seen on TV. It’s great to be able to do this together and it works out that we both have the same desires, not just traveling, but we want to dive into the culture and explore half the time, while relaxing the other half of the time.

8.) Is there a question people ask or advice that people give to you while traveling that drives you nuts?

For us, it’s not a question or advice that drives us nuts, it’s when people say “I wish I could do what you guys are doing”….when they definitely could. Don’t get us wrong I know there are people who truly can’t because of family matters or their career, but there are a lot of people who have said this to us, who don’t really have anything holding them back…besides themselves!

We’re not millionaires,  we have tons of student debt, but there are tons of ways that you can travel and reach all your goals, all while not sacrificing your career or wallet. There is always a way, it takes some creativity and some perseverance, but you can find a way to make your goals happen just like we are.

9.) Where is someplace you’d like to visit that you haven’t visited yet?

For Steve it’s Australia. To be able to explore Sydney, snorkel/scuba dive in the great barrier reef and enjoy everything it has to offer.

For Amanda it’s Bali. To be able to relax on the beach, take cooking classes, explore the culture and food, and overall just have fun.

10.) What’s been your favorite thing you’ve eaten while traveling?

For Steve it was Gnocchi we had at La Giostra restaurant in Florence, Italy. We had friends recommend it to us so we separated from our tour group that night, got lost wandering the streets of Florence, but eventually we found our way to this restaurant and it did not disappoint! Not only was the meal amazing, but the ambience was great and the chef even came out to talk to us for a little bit!

For Amanda, it was definitely a tough decision. But for her the meal that sticks with her the most might be a bit surprising. For breakfast:  We went to a place called Matt’s Big Breakfast, and let me tell you, they had the BEST coffee, waffles and peppered bacon of all time. It was exactly what I needed after a long road trip.
